Day 1: From Djerba to the Desert Oases

Your journey begins with an early departure from your accommodation, traveling along the historic Roman causeway as you head toward the desert city of Tozeur.

A short stop is planned in El Hamma for a relaxing coffee break, during which your guide will present a detailed overview of the program.

The adventure continues across the spectacular Chott El Jerid, the largest salt lake in the Sahara. Renowned for its shimmering, multicolored salt crusts, fascinating mirages, and vast desert scenery, this iconic site offers an exceptional photo opportunity.

Upon arrival in Tozeur, you will check in to your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved lunch.

In the afternoon, set out on an excursion to the mountain oases, beginning with Chebika—often referred to as the “Palace of the Sun.” Nestled against the dramatic Atlas Mountains near the Algerian border, this breathtaking oasis features natural springs, waterfalls, and panoramic desert views. Guests may enjoy free time to explore the surroundings and even take a refreshing swim.

The journey then continues to Ong Jmal, a remarkable desert landscape famous for its camel-neck-shaped rock formation and its role as a filming location for Star Wars, including Mos Espa, the hometown of Anakin Skywalker. Located near Nefta and the Chott El Gharsa salt flats, this site is a highlight for both nature lovers and film enthusiasts.

After this unforgettable excursion, return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Berber Heritage & Desert Traditions

After breakfast, begin the day with a guided visit to Tozeur’s historic medina. This architectural gem, distinguished by its intricate decorative brickwork, invites you to wander through its narrow alleyways while learning about local history, culture, and craftsmanship.

Next, travel to Douz, widely known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Here, guests may choose an optional camel ride or quad bike excursion to experience the vast desert landscape from a unique perspective.

A traditional local lunch will be served in Douz before continuing the journey toward the Berber highlands.

The next stop is Tamazret, a historic Berber village perched in the mountains near Matmata. Renowned for its hillside architecture, preserved traditions, and panoramic views, Tamazret offers an authentic glimpse into Berber culture, where the amazight language is still spoken.

Continue on to Matmata, where you will visit a local family living in a traditional troglodyte home carved into the earth. Enjoy warm Berber hospitality as your hosts serve rosemary tea with honey and olive oil. Take time to explore the unique structure of the home and gain insight into the simple, time-honored lifestyle of its inhabitants.

The tour then proceeds to the famous Sidi Idriss Hotel, a troglodyte site internationally known as the filming location of Luke Skywalker’s home (the Lars Homestead) in Star Wars.

Following this, a local lunch will be served in sidi idriss

Your final stop is Toujane, a picturesque Berber village set between two mountains. Admire sweeping panoramic views before exploring the village, celebrated for its handmade Berber carpets and locally produced honey.

In the late afternoon, begin the return journey to the island of Djerba, bringing this extraordinary desert and cultural experience to a close—leaving you with unforgettable memories of southern Tunisia.

Day 1: From Tataouine to the Desert Oasis

Your journey begins with a departure from your accommodation, traveling along the historic Roman road toward Tataouine.

A scenic photo stop is planned at the striking Chahbania Salt Lake, where your guide will provide an overview of the day’s itinerary.

Upon arrival in Tataouine, enjoy some leisure time to explore the bustling local market, immersing yourself in the vibrant colors, scents, and traditions of southern Tunisia.

Next, visit Ksar Ouled Soltan, a remarkably well-preserved 15th-century Berber fortified granary (“ksar”). Built from mudbrick with multi-story vaulted storage rooms, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history and architecture.

Continue to the ancient Berber village of Chenini, where you’ll explore the horizontally-excavated dwellings integrated into the mountainside. Dating back to the 11th century, Chenini provides a captivating view into traditional Berber life.

A traditional Local lunch will be served at a local restaurant before the adventure continues.

In the afternoon, embark on a thrilling 4x4 excursion along sandy desert tracks to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, an exotic destination with lush camps and a natural water source. Optional activities include camel rides or quad biking across the golden Erg dunes to the nearby ancient Roman fort (available at an additional cost).

The journey back includes a stop at the oasis hot spring, where guests may enjoy a refreshing swim—swimwear and towels are recommended.

Continue by 4x4 to the desert camp at the base of the dunes (Zmela Camp or similar), an experience accessible only by 4x4 vehicles. Upon arrival, witness the breathtaking Saharan sunset before settling into your tented accommodation.

Dinner is served at the camp, followed by an enchanting evening under the desert stars.

Day 2: Berber Villages, Troglodyte Homes & Star Wars Landscapes

After a leisurely breakfast, enjoy some free time at Ksar Ghilane. Relax in the natural hot spring surrounded by palm groves and dunes, a perfect oasis for swimming and rejuvenation.

Next, travel to the mountainous Berber village of Tamezret, known for its traditional stone houses, ancient roots as a caravan stop, and panoramic views over the Dahar Mountains. A brief photo stop will allow you to capture the stunning scenery.

Continue to Matmata, famous for its troglodyte dwellings carved into the earth. Explore the unique underground homes and the surrounding lunar-like landscape, famously featured in Star Wars. You will also visit a local family in their troglodyte home, where a traditional lunch will be served, offering an authentic taste of Berber hospitality.

The tour then proceeds to Sidi Idriss, a historic troglodyte site widely recognized as the filming location for Luke Skywalker’s Lars Homestead in Star Wars.

In the afternoon, journey to Toujane, a picturesque Berber village nestled between mountains. Take in the panoramic vistas before exploring the village, known for its handmade carpets and local traditions.

Finally, return to your hotel, concluding a two-day journey through southern Tunisia’s desert landscapes, historic villages, and cinematic landmarks, leaving you with unforgettable memories of the Sahara.

At 6:45 a.m our team will provide pick-up service from your specified location in Djerba or Zarzis to commence your Tunisian desert adventure.

We will then depart the island via the Roman road, proceeding towards the mainland. A briefing will be conducted at a cafe situated amidst olive groves, where your guide will provide a detailed overview of the desert excursion itinerary from Djerba to Ksar Ghilane, including a route map. 

Subsequently, we will proceed to a brief stop will be made to appreciate the panoramic mountain view, situated at an elevation of approximately 420 meters above sea level. 

Following this, we will embark on the stony tracks of the Tunisian Desert, experiencing a change of scenery and the thrill of a 4x4 vehicle. 

A brief photo stop will be scheduled in a remote location, during which we encourage you to appreciate the unique silence of the desert environment; there is also the potential for encounters with Bedouins and their livestock.

The Oasis of Ksar Ghilane is situated amidst the pristine sand dunes, marking the commencement of the Grand Erg Oriental.

Upon your arrival in Ksar Ghilane, you will be afforded leisure time to appreciate the oases surrounding the thermal spring.

Swimming facilities are available.

Additionally, you may elect to participate in one or both of the offered activities, which provide an opportunity to explore the profound desert and experience the unique dune landscape.  

Quad bikes and camels are available a short distance away, offering optional excursions across the dunes and to the Tisavar Fort, (On-site activities are available, with associated costs payable directly to local service providers).

Lunch will be served around 1:00 p.m., featuring authentic Tunisian cuisine in a traditional setting, including a starter, main course, and dessert, typically soup, Tunisian couscous, and seasonal fruit.

Following lunch, guests are encouraged to capture photos before commencing the return journey to Djerba, with a stop at the renowned Ksar Hallouf. Ksar Hallouf is a historic fortified granary complex (ksar) in southern Tunisia, built in the 13th century and expanded in the mid-19th century. Perched on a hill, it features distinctive Berber architecture with two-story, terraced houses and the ghorfas

Guests can explore this distinctive architecture and appreciate the panoramic views of the surrounding palm groves. 

The return to Djerba is scheduled for approximately 4:30 p.m concluding the day's excursion

Following a brief introduction, embark on a journey to explore the remarkable attractions of Southern Tunisia.

Initiate your expedition by departing from the island of Djerba, traversing an ancient Roman road and capturing picturesque photographs of Chahbania en route.  

Proceed to Ksar Ouled Soltane, near Tataouine in southern Tunisia, is a remarkably preserved, 15th-century Berber fortified granary (ksar) made of adobe, featuring stacked vaulted rooms called ghorfas around two courtyards for storing food and valuables, strategically built on a hilltop for defense against raids, and gained international fame as a filming location for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 

Subsequently, continue your journey to Ksar Daghara is a traditional, fortified Berber granary village (a ksar) in Tunisia's Tataouine region, built by North African tribes for storing crops and defense, featuring stacked, vaulted rooms (ghorfas) and central courtyards, and is part of the UNESCO

Then we will visit Chenini is an ancient Berber village in southern Tunisia, famous for its unique architecture carved into the rock, traditional cave-like homes, and a prominent white mosque connecting the peaks, offering a glimpse into centuries-old Berber life as well the place where we will have local lunch before going to djerba back we will visit Ksar Hadada, where some scenes from the movie Star wars episode I: The Phantom Menace” were filmed. 

Conclude your exceptional day by returning to Djerba in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle.
